Charles Mingus discusses his song titles, highlighting "Meditations on Integration," also known as "Meditations for a Pair of Wire-Cutters," which he was inspired to write in 1964 after conversations with Eric Dolphy about the U.S. government's treatment of protesters during the Civil Rights movement.
The spoken audio and transcript come from a Smithsonian oral history project interview with Charles Mingus, Sue Mingus, and Sy Johnson, conducted February 19-22, 1978.
Music is a mix of two performances of "Meditations on Integration," from the albums Revenge! (recorded April 17, 1964 at Salle Wagram, Paris) and Mingus at Monterey (recorded September 20, 1964 at the Monterey Jazz Festival).
