In this session, I have discussed the new Consumer Protection Act, 2019, enforced recently on July 20, 2020. The new Act repeals the earlier existing Consumer Protection Act, 1986 as the consumer patterns and methods of shopping have changed considerably over the past few decades.
These days we are more reliant on online shopping which provides hassle-free service at our doorsteps. The new legislation includes the online shoppers within its purview and provides them protection. The Act also changes the pecuniary jurisdiction of various forums established under the Act.
One major improvement in the new Act is the constitution of the Central Consumer Protection Act (CCPA) with investigative powers. Interestingly, the Act also penalizes the endorsers for any misleading or false advertisments.
