What did Please Please Me sound like before George Martin sped it up?
On September 4th 1962 at Abbey Road Studio 2, The Beatles rehearsed a much slower, Roy Orbison-inspired version of the song — one George Martin later described as “very dreary” before suggesting they increase the tempo.
This video recreates what that lost arrangement may have sounded like.
I reduced the tempo to 122 BPM — matching Roy Orbison’s “Only The Lonely,” the record John Lennon said inspired him when writing the song. The later bridge call-and-response has been removed, the rhythm returns to a single-strum Orbison feel, and the ending shifts into a waltz-style close, reflecting how it may have evolved during those early sessions.
All instruments were played and recorded by me using period-correct gear, including Hofner bass and Epiphone J-160E. Drum parts were reconstructed from isolated early Beatles recordings.
No AI was used — this is a fully performed and arranged recreation.
If you’re interested in how small production decisions changed Beatles history, this one’s for you.
