I love Mexican cane juice rum. And I also love El Grito, the big festival here in Chicago (among other places) where you eat lots of tortas and paletas and get stuck in bizarre traffic behind waves of Mexican flags (N.B. yes the big official thing was cancelled this year, but don't think that stopped Pilsen or Little Village). So we're celebrating Mexican independence here at DS by tasting through five newish offerings from Uruapan, an impressive little charanda brand I've been recommending for awhile now (go watch • Unaged Mexican Rumparison: Uruapan Blended... and • Uruapan Charanda Blanco Single Agricola "R... and • My Shopping Bag 3: Yokka Koji Awamori, Uru... ). These are upwards extensions of their current range, each made from a single cane varietal. And, well, this didn't quite go how I wanted:
Uruapan Charanda Blanco Single Agricola "Rum," Caña Criolla (Michoacán; distilled from 100% D.O. Estate Cane Juice in a wood-fired copper pot still; bottled circa 2024; 49% ABV), 83/100
Uruapan Charanda Blanco Single Agricola "Rum," Caña Cristalina (Michoacán; distilled from 100% D.O. Estate Cane Juice in a wood-fired copper pot still; bottled circa 2024; 49% ABV), 82👻/100
Uruapan Charanda Blanco Single Agricola "Rum," Caña Mayari (Michoacán; distilled from 100% D.O. Estate Cane Juice in a wood-fired copper pot still; bottled circa 2024; 49% ABV), 86/100
Uruapan Charanda Blanco Single Agricola "Rum," Caña Mexicana (Michoacán; distilled from 100% D.O. Estate Cane Juice in a wood-fired copper pot still; bottled circa 2024; 49% ABV), 84+/100
Uruapan Charanda Blanco Single Agricola "Rum," Caña Morada (Michoacán; distilled from 100% D.O. Estate Cane Juice in a wood-fired copper pot still; bottled circa 2024; 49% ABV), 85+/100
I mean, they're all fine, but I was looking for better than fine. For me, the two really worth tasting are the Caña Morada and Caña Mayari. The Morada is really interesting, a hugely flower-driven cane juicer with an energy I've never quite encountered before; the Mayari is more "traditional" in a sense, closer to savory, this-smells-like-food sorts of rums like Paranubes, but if anything it's a bit better than the Morada and improves significantly with water. The Caña Mexicana is a step behind those two, coming across a bit like a little brother to Clairin Le Rocher (it has that savory birthday cake thing), but there's still something to it. And the Caña Criolla and Cristalina just aren't it: the Criolla brings a fun candy shop vibe but just doesn't deliver that well, while the Cristalina seems to just disappear halfway across my palate. So go check out the Morada and Mayari... or really, just go buy the basic Agricola I guess?
