Cyclone Gaja intensified into a severe cyclonic storm Thursday, the latest bulletin by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said, with Tamil Nadu and Puducherry bracing for its expected landfall later in the evening today. The cyclonic storm over Southwest Bay of Bengal lay centered about 280 km southeast from Chennai and 240 km east-northeast of Nagapattinam of Tamil Nadu as of 11:30 am on Thursday and was moving further west-southwestwards with a speed of 17kmph, the bulletin added.
The cyclone is expected to weaken before crossing and making landfall across Tamil Nadu coast between Pamban and Cuddalore, around Nagapattinam on Thursday evening with wind speeds touching 80-90 kmph and gusts at times touching 100 km/hr. However, it is expected to spare Chennai as the
