Sometimes science produces the most incredible artifacts.

This is the 880 by System 80.

It is the culmination of over 4.5 billion years of science.

A drum instrument in #eurorack, #modularsynth form.

The wonderfully slim knobs adjacent to soft black nubs, those gorgeous autumn buttons portending change.

Honestly, I don’t care about the muse; a garrish, oversized box.

Even if the 880 made no sounds it would suffuse no less of an effect on me.

I have been admiring this module online for many winters. It’s hard to believe that it is so close to me now.

When I had the great fortune of meeting its maker in person I was giddy inside, like a child.

I remember the drive, it was a strangely warm October day. The air was making way for something new.

We talked for a while, or perhaps I imagined it all and I was just listening to the wind sing to me.

All I could hear in my head were the sounds that this wonderful instrument might soon make. I clutched that cardboard box with such joy.

Truly, aesthetically, the 880 is perfection.

Everything about it is so perfectly balanced, intentional; referential but its own.

Superlative.

There is a not so fine line where engineering becomes art; a stupefying array of conditions aligned just so.

What collection of components lies beneath? How much time and care goes into producing just one of these?

I am in awe.

In the presence of the 800, the sun will cast a shadow that is matched by no other on this planet since time began.
