They rode the rails like ghosts.

Hidden beneath tarps and coal dust, Arthur Kingsley and his team clung to the rattling underbelly of a freight train cutting through occupied Europe. Ahead of them, another train thundered along the same track—German-guarded, bound for Hamburg. At Arthur’s signal, they moved.

The assault was fast and brutal. Gunfire cracked through the night as the two trains screamed side by side. Richard Webb was the first aboard, his knife silent. Polina Petrova dropped a sentry before he could shout. Wade Jackson cleared a carriage with ruthless efficiency, Lucas Riggs and Milos Novak close behind. Within minutes, both trains were theirs, German bodies sprawled across steel floors slick with oil and blood.

As the engines slowed, Lucas finally snapped. Why them? Why this madness?
Arthur answered calmly: the Special Operations Executive had chosen them to uncover something called Project Phoenix. No one knew what it was—only that it mattered.

Polina scoffed. If it was so important, why not send an army?
Arthur met her eyes. They had.
Lucas laughed bitterly. They weren’t even from the same continent.
Richard cut in, voice cold and experienced. This wasn’t a campaign—it was butcher-and-bolt. Too dirty, too deniable for regular troops.

Wade slammed the brakes. The train screamed to a halt beside a German submarine base, floodlights stabbing the darkness. They stormed the compound under heavy fire, cutting through the armada guarding it. When they reached the main office, it was empty—papers gone, desks cold.

Phoenix wasn’t widespread. It was guarded by a clique.

They split. Arthur, Richard, and Novak slipped into a docked U-boat. Wade, Lucas, and Polina sealed the exits.

Inside the submarine, the air was tight and metallic. Arthur and Novak found it—a locked box marked with ciphers. The Phoenix documents. Victory was seconds away.

Then the trap closed.

German soldiers poured in from hidden compartments. Richard went down fighting. Arthur and Novak were overwhelmed. Above, Lucas and Polina were captured trying to break through to them.

They were dragged together before Hermann Freisinger—the man behind Phoenix.

Freisinger studied them like curiosities, lingering on Arthur. A black British officer, leading this strange coalition. Fascinating. Offensive.

Arthur smiled anyway. He told Freisinger he had studied at Cambridge. He mocked him with talk of Allied landings, of a Reich already bleeding out.

Freisinger’s face hardened.

Without a word, he lifted a chair and brought it down on Novak’s skull. Once. Twice. Until the resistance stopped.

He ordered the rest taken away.

Project Phoenix remained hidden. And the war grew darker.
