Hélène Marie Philippine de Chappotin de Neuville was born on May 21, 1839 in France. She entered the Society of Mary Reparatrice on May 16, 1864.

In April 1865 while Helen was at prayer she heard an interior voice of Jesus say to her: “It is I who will always love you far more than you will ever love Me.”

Helen was given the religious name, Mary of the Passion and while still a novice, she was sent on mission to India and arrived there on July 9, 1867. She because the superior of the new mission.

As you will see in the musical, a conflict developed over how to do missionary work and live a cloistered convent life. A new community, Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, was formed by Mary of the Passion and she becamee the foundress and mother superior.

Mary of the Passion died on Nov. 15, 1904 and was beatified on Oct. 20, 2002.
