The "Billie Jean" music video, directed by Steve Barron, was the first by a black artist to be aired in heavy rotation on MTV. Rolling Stone placed it at number 58 on its list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 2004, and at number 44 in its updated 2021 list. The song was also included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. It is frequently featured in lists of the best songs.
