I found the missing link in Mega Man 2 history. This is a development prototype of the US NES version that still contains the original Japanese text and boss names—including the legendary "Clashman."
The Discovery: I spent years searching for this specific development cartridge. This build represents a "mid-localization" state where Capcom was transitioning the Japanese Famicom code to the North American NES. Because of its rarity and historical value, I traveled to Boston to pick it up in person rather than risking it in shipping.
What’s Different? In this video, I break down the specific text and spacing anomalies that didn't make it to the final 1988 retail release:
Clashman vs. Crashman: The prototype retains the original Japanese name on the stage select screen.
PASS WORD: Notice the unique character spacing that was later removed.
Weapon Menu: Subtle differences in how items are hyphenated and listed.
