This is part 1 of Lecture 3 in the lecture series "Mathematical Aspects of Quantum Mechanics" of Roland Speicher in the winter term 2020/21 at Saarland University, Germany. Lecture 3, which is split into three parts, shows that for the CCR we have to go beyond bounded operators and it introduces the basic theory of unbounded operators on Hilbert spaces.
