‘The Chicken’ is an instrumental funk tune that was composed by Pee Wee Ellis. It was originally released by James Brown as a B-side to his 1969 single ‘Popcorn’, consisting of a punchy horn section underpinned by a solid, groovy bassline. The song had several covers recorded after its release, with arguably the best-known version coming from Jaco Pastorious. He greatly extended its structure, providing further opportunity for more extensive instrumental solos. ‘The Chicken’ is now considered a jazz funk standard and has been played by several acclaimed ac t s such as saxophonist Maceo Parker and funk group Breakestra.

Known primarily for his work as bassist in the jazz fusion band Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius started learning music by playing drums as a child before moving onto bass guitar in high school as part of a soul band. Having collaborated with a wide range of musicians such as Pat Metheny, Joni Mitchell and Herbie Hancock, he released his groundbreaking eponymous debut album in 1976 and was performing as a member of Weather Report until the early ‘80s. Pastorius’ career was sadly cut short after his untimely death in 1987, but he left behind a legacy of revered live and studio albums, which demonstrate his phenomenal bass technique and musicality.
