In May 2016, the Japanese American National Museum was honored to receive an original origami crane folded by Sadako Sasaki, a young girl who contracted leukemia as a result of the Hiroshima atomic bombing. Following an old Japanese belief, Sasaki folded over 1,000 paper cranes in an attempt to recover. Although she passed away in 1955, the paper crane has become a popular symbol of peace and hope.
The program included remarks by Sasaki's brother Masahiro and President Harry S. Truman's grandson Clifton Truman Daniel. The origami crane is now on view at JANM. Visit http://janm.org/sadako-crane for more information.
