Описание: Can a regulator punish an entire law school batch for the dissent of a few students?

The Bar Council of India initially stopped the entire NALSAR 2026 batch from being enrolled as advocates after students questioned the invitation of CJI Suryakant to their convocation.

But in the Supreme Court, CJI Suryakant said the BCI action was “absolutely unnecessary” and “totally uncalled for.”

Then came Justice Joymalya Bagchi’s crucial question:

“Was BCI convened to take a resolution like that? We want to know.”

The order was withdrawn within 48 hours. But the bigger questions remain — Was the decision taken with proper authority? Was there a Council meeting? And can students be collectively punished for exercising their right to dissent?

The Supreme Court has also ordered that no Bar Council take punitive action against law students in connection with this matter.

An order being withdrawn may fix the immediate problem. But does it answer the question of accountability?
