Tama Starclassic Maple vs. Walnut/Birch Comparison
I only compared the rack toms because my floor toms and bass drums are different sizes. Rack tom sizes are 10x7" and 12x8". Same tuning, same heads (Evans coated G2s over clear G1s).
My thoughts: The difference in sound between the two kits is pretty insignificant. Tuning, head choice, and muffling will all have a much more significant impact on the sound than the shell material in this case. Both sets of shells are fantastic. Personally, I prefer the walnut/birch. Even if your preference is the maple, I can't find a justification for spending the extra money on the maple considering how incredibly similar these sound.
