In this episode of Sachu Kau, Goonj Thakkar suggests that while India is heavily dependent on imports—61% of LPG and 50% of Natural Gas, with 80% of imports coming through the Strait of Hormuz (Qatar, Saudi Arabia)—the government has taken decisive action in response to potential supply disruptions from Middle East Tensions.
👉🏼Government Action and Supply Control
The Essential Commodities Act, 1955 has been invoked.
👉🏼The Natural Gas (Supply Regulation) Order, 2026 was passed by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, applicable to PNG, CNG, and LPG.
👉🏼Impact on Consumers and Industry
Domestic Consumers: Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, has confirmed no shortage for domestic consumers and advised against panic, guaranteeing 100% supply for domestic CNG and PNG. To prevent hoarding, the refill monitoring window between two consecutive LPG orders has been increased from 21 days to 25 days.
👉🏼Industrial and Commercial Consumers: Supply has been restricted based on the average consumption of the last six months:
👉🏼Fertilisers (Priority Sector II): 70% supply.
👉🏼Tea, Manufacturing, and other Industrial Consumers (Priority Sector III): 80% supply.
👉🏼City Gas Distribution (Industrial and Commercial, Restaurants & Hotels - Priority Sector IV): 80% supply.
👉🏼Supply Reallocation: Gas is to be sourced from power plants and petrochemical facilities, with supply to refineries limited to 65% of their last six months' average.
👉🏼Other Fuels: No shortage is anticipated for Petrol or Diesel.
