Are you experiencing chronic neck, shoulder, and arm pain; and are unable to figure out why? While there can be multiple reasons for such pain, one common cause for women experiencing this pain could be due to their bras.
Bra Strap Syndrome, refers to Costoclavicular Syndrome – compression or irritation of the nerves, blood vessels, or both in the thoracic outlet area. The thoracic outlet refers to the space between your collarbone (clavicle) and your first rib.
When caused by bra, it usually happens when your bra strap is tight and pressurizes your shoulders – causing pain in neck, shoulders, upper back and arm. Obese, heavy breasted, middle aged or elderly women are at a higher risk.
If your bra straps are tight or narrow, and if your breasts are heavy, these straps can cut into the soft tissues around your shoulders and exert direct pressure on the clavicles. The wrong bra can make an impact – very tight bras with tight small and thin straps, very tight chest band, or wrong cup size.
People with Bra Strap Syndrome often experience pain or ache in the neck or shoulder area, sometimes accompanied by stiffness as well. Symptoms are aggravated when you work or do exercise, particularly while carrying heavy objects. As per reports, symptoms are relieved by rest and sleep, however, it may be temporary. These signs are minimal or absent in the morning and become pronounced as the day progresses. Patients occasionally also complain of puffy blue hands as another symptom.
People experiencing this syndrome have a tendency to stoop and be 'round shouldered.’ This happens as an involuntary measure to relieve pressure on their shoulders. However, doing so can further narrow the patient’s costoclavicular passage by pushing the scapula (shoulder blade) forwards.
If you experience any such chronic pain, it is important to consult your doctor for a proper diagnosis. Patients are advised to wear either strapless bras or bras with broad straps. A shoulder pad can also help – threaded through the strap. This can help distribute the downward force exerted by the straps. Make sure you buy bras in which the straps are not too tight. If you are suffering from pain, avoid carrying heavy objects. Make sure you improve your posture and avoid stooping. Shoulder girdle exercises can also help, but make sure you consult your doctor first.
