Santo Domingo and Bani, Dominican Republic - 23 August 1998
Fidel Castro met former Dominican Republic President Joaquin Balaguer - staunchly anti-communist and one of Latin America's last "caudillos" or strongmen.
On the fourth day of his first visit to the Dominican Republic, Castro also met an old friend, one-time Marxist and former President Juan Bosch.
Castro then visited Bani, the hometown of General Maximo Gomez, who fought for Cuba's independence from Spain in the late 19th century.
