I am no means a professional when it comes to electrical and learning as I go as well. If there is something I have done wrong, please let myself and everyone know.
Been planning to go for a motorcycle trip and camp to make up for the time in lockdown. Needed something to keep the battery topped up while providing another source of power without needing to carry another battery. MPPT or a PWM will allow you to connect accessories directly to run off solar rather than using your battery.
Storing your motorcycle for winter and you are looking to set and forget, its best to get a premade solar trickle charge setup for your motorcycle. They output a very minimal amount of amps to keep your battery topped up during storage.
Note: Solar panel I am using is only temporary , I have ordered a small flexible panel to keep in my back pack.
Basic introduction to solar:
You cannot plug in a large Watt solar panel directly to the battery. It will cause damage and fry the battery.
Control the power from the solar panel via solar charger.
Different types of solar chargers: MPPT or PWM which will send usable voltage to charge the battery. To learn more about MPPT vs PWM best to watch this video: • SOLAR REGULATORS EXPLAINED! PWM versus MPP...
Ensure you have a fuse between the battery and the solar charger to protect the battery in case of any faults.
