The Lake That Killed 1,700 People Without Warning | Lake Nyos

Описание: On August 21, 1986, something terrifying happened around Lake Nyos in Cameroon.

There was no lava. No fire. No massive explosion.

And yet, by morning, more than 1,700 people were dead.

The cause was almost impossible to see: a catastrophic release of carbon dioxide from deep beneath the lake.

In this episode of Outrageously True, we explore how Lake Nyos quietly accumulated dissolved volcanic gas, what may have triggered the deadly chain reaction, why the carbon dioxide stayed close to the ground, and how entire communities were overwhelmed within a short period of time.

We also look at the earlier Lake Monoun disaster, the science behind limnic eruptions, and the degassing system later installed to reduce the risk of another catastrophe.

Some stories sound too extraordinary to be true.

This one happened.
