As I explained in my video there is really 2 common ways to power 12VDC CCTV security cameras. The first is a simple plug in 12VDC power transformer, and the 2nd is a multi-camera power supply. I am not a huge fan of using the single power supply to power multiple cameras. Often those are unplugged, stepped on, or moved in a way the cameras will lose their power. Plus it is just not a clean look to have multiple transformers with wires scattered on a power strip. The cleanest way is to use a multi-camera power supply. This gives you a strong durable housing that can be wall mounted to protect your connections. It is also much easier to manage your power connections in one central box. A CCTV power supply has simple to use terminal blocks that allow you to easily screw down your multi-conductor cable that is being used to send power from the power supply to the camera. As I mentioned in my video 12VDC is very tough to work with. Many of the cheaper CCTV cameras of today are 12VDC and they also need a lot of power to operate correctly. So with 12VDC you need to really account for voltage drop. You never have these issues with 24VAC. This is why I usually recommend that if you are installing a large system you will save yourself some headaches by using 24VAC security cameras. Just remember that if you are using CCTV cameras that have infrared LED's to need to account for their power needs at night. Often when the LED's turn on at night they amount of power the camera needs increases about 30%. Really look at the specifications of the camera and choose the power supply that will best support it!
