Hira Cave is a small, historic cave located on the Mountain of Light (Jabal al-Noor) near Makkah, Saudi Arabia. It holds immense significance in Islam because it is the place where the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) received the first revelation from Allah through the Angel Jibreel . The cave is situated about 3 kilometers northeast of the Kaaba in Makkah.
• It sits high on Jabal al-Noor, a rocky mountain whose name means “Mountain of Light.”
• The cave itself is small and narrow, about 1.8 meters long and 1 meter wide, enough for one or two people to sit or lie down.
• Around the age of 40, Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) used to retreat here for solitude and meditation, reflecting on life and the moral state of his people.
• It was in this cave that, during one of his retreats in the month of Ramadan, the Angel Jibreel appeared and revealed the first verses of the Qur’an:
“Read! In the name of your Lord who created…”
(Surah Al-‘Alaq 96:1–5)
• This moment marks the beginning of prophethood and the start of the Qur’anic revelation, making Hira Cave one of the most sacred places in Islamic history.
