The Parthenon Marbles—also known as the Elgin Marbles—are a collection of ancient Greek sculptures originally created for the Parthenon and other buildings on the Acropolis of Athens. Today, a large portion of them is housed in the British Museum in London, displayed in the Duveen Gallery.
Key points:
Origin: Sculpted under the direction of Phidias in the 5th century BCE.
How they got to London: Thomas Bruce, the 7th Earl of Elgin, removed them from the Parthenon in the early 1800s, during Ottoman rule in Greece, and sold them to the British Museum.
Ongoing debate: Greece has long requested the return of the Parthenon Marbles to Athens, where the Acropolis Museum has a dedicated space waiting for the reunited sculptures. The British Museum maintains that the Elgin Marbles were legally acquired and should remain accessible as part of a world collection.
Let's visit the British Museum which is a public museum in London, dedicated to human history, art and culture. The British Museum was established in 1753, making it one of the first public national museums in the world.
The British Museum’s core purpose from the start was that the collection “should be put to public use and be freely accessible” — reflecting Enlightenment ideals of shared cultural and intellectual knowledge.
Over time the British Museum has evolved: adding new wings and incorporating modern architectural and conservation requirements — for example, the famous glass-roofed Great Court (opened in 2000), enclosing the old round reading room.
The British Museum holds around 8 million objects from across the globe.
At any one time, roughly 80,000 objects are on public display.
