Netherlands all-rounder Paul van Meekeren delivered a brutally honest assessment after his side’s narrow defeat to Pakistan in the T20 World Cup, saying the match was lost by the Dutch themselves rather than won by Pakistan.

Netherlands were in control for large parts of the game — cruising at 50/2 after the powerplay and 123/4 after 15 overs with skipper Scott Edwards well set. A total close to 170 looked firmly on the cards, but a sudden collapse — three wickets in five balls — derailed their innings and restricted them to 147.

The turning point, however, came during Pakistan’s chase. Pakistan suffered a dramatic collapse, with van Meekeren at the heart of it, and Netherlands were within touching distance of a famous upset. But missed chances in the penultimate over proved decisive, allowing Pakistan to escape and leaving the Dutch camp full of regret.
