The United States has consistently led NATO in both absolute military expenditure and the percentage of GDP dedicated to defense. During the Cold War, U.S. defense spending often exceeded 5% of GDP, peaking during the Vietnam War and the 1980s arms build-up. By 2024, while this figure has declined to around 3.5%, the U.S. still accounts for the largest share of NATO’s defense budget, underscoring its role as the alliance's primary contributor.
