Rapid Transit or Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), also known as heavy rail, metro, subway, tube, U-Bahn, metropolitana or underground, is a type of high-capacity public transport generally found in urban areas. Unlike buses or trams, rapid transit systems are electric railways that operate on an exclusive right-of-way, which cannot be accessed by pedestrians or other vehicles of any sort, and which is often grade-separated in tunnels or on elevated railways.


There are currently 13 operational rapid transit (also called 'Metro') systems in 21 cities in India. For instance, the Delhi Metro itself is connected to few other nearby cities in the National Capital Region. As of August 2019, India has 678.52 kilometers (421.61 miles) of operational metro lines and 540 stations. A further 500+ km of lines are under construction. Metro rail lines in India are composed of mainly standard gauge. Projects like the Kolkata Metro and Delhi Metro used broad gauge for their earliest lines but all new projects in India are on standard gauge as rolling stock is of standard gauge.
