Just like with many other aspects of the Celtic cultures, so too does the role of women vary depending on the region and time.
Women were mostly caretakers of the home, children, food and water. While weapons were most often buried with men, jewelry and spindle whorls were the characteristic grave goods of female graves. That being said, instances of women buried in as rich graves as their male counterparts were found across Europe. Especially in the British Isles, women also took part in battle and were as brave and fierce warriors as male, the most famous among them probably Boudica, who led an uprising against Romans.
While Julius Caesar mentions that a husband had control over his wife and children, Diodorus of Sicily writes that women didn’t lack in size, courage or behavior.
The fashion and especially jewelry is one more indicator of strong regional differences between the Celtic peoples. For example, many areas have long maintained the fashion of the proceeding cultures of the Early Iron age, with Celtic pieces only gradually entering that fashion in that space.
Despite that, jewelry and costume can also indicate contacts and trade between communities. This is especially true for brooches, which remained the most worn piece of women’s attire during the Late Iron Age. Different materials were used in the creation of the apparel: gold, silver, bronze, glass, and more.
