A rebound stroke is 1 of the 4 types of strokes in rudimental drumming. Rebound strokes start in the high position, and return to this position after striking the drum. It is important that your grip (episode 1 & 2) allow the stick to naturally rebound off the head of the drum or pad, so that you may utilize that momentum and energy in the music that follows.
The second stroke we identify is a down stroke. A down stroke, like a rebound stroke, begin in the high position, only this stroke will stop in the low, or down position after striking the drum. While these two strokes are different, they will sound the same, being that they start in the same position.
Utilizing these two strokes, we learn a simple drumline exercise called, 8 on a hand. The exercise is 8 - eighth notes, played on one hand, then 8 - eighth notes played on the opposite hand. In order to play this exercise correctly, it is important that you pay attention to your transitions. A transition, is where you stop playing on one hand, and then move to the next hand, with the goal of making the transfer seamless. In order to do so, you have to prepare for the transition, or prep, on the "and" of 4. Finally, 8 on a hand is demonstrated in full.
