NASA Just Made Oxygen on Mars — And It Changes Everything
Imagine standing on the surface of Mars, breathing air made right there on the Red Planet. It might sound like science fiction, but NASA just brought us one step closer to that reality.
In this video, we’ll explore one of the most exciting breakthroughs in space exploration: the creation of oxygen on Mars using the MOXIE device onboard NASA’s Perseverance rover. MOXIE — short for Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment — has successfully extracted breathable oxygen from the Martian atmosphere. That’s right: we've officially made air on another planet.
🌌 What's in the Martian Air?
Mars has a thin atmosphere made up of more than 95% carbon dioxide (CO₂). There’s almost no oxygen — only about 0.13%, compared to 21% here on Earth. That makes breathing on Mars impossible without life support systems... until now.
But here’s the twist: every molecule of carbon dioxide contains two atoms of oxygen. The trick is figuring out how to extract those oxygen atoms and make them breathable.
🧪 How Did NASA Do It?
Enter MOXIE — a toaster-sized machine aboard the Perseverance rover that performs solid oxide electrolysis. In simple terms, it heats up the CO₂ from Mars’ atmosphere to around 800°C, splits the molecules, and releases pure oxygen.
In one test, MOXIE produced 10 grams of oxygen — enough for a small dog to breathe for about 10 minutes. Not much, but it proves the tech works. And that changes everything.
This tiny device is a proof of concept — a first step toward large-scale oxygen production facilities that could one day support human missions, greenhouses, and maybe even long-term settlements on Mars.

This isn't just about making oxygen. It’s about turning Mars from a hostile environment into a place we can live. Oxygen is essential — not only for breathing, but also for making rocket fuel.
