In the Maritime ‘Training in India, the T. S. Dufferin played a pioneering, role which not only made India truly a maritime nation but also helped other countries in the region. Though the Dufferin has been succeeded by the T.S. Rajendra and the D.M.E.T., now T.S. Chanakya & MERI she continues to inspire cadets passing through these institutes.
Although India attained independence in 1947, it was not until 1950 when Jalagopal, a passenger-cum-cargo vessel with a full complement of Indian Officers and crew crossed the oceans. It is also to the credit of the Dufferin that the first Indian Chief of Naval Staff appointed in 1958 was an ex-cadet of the 1st batch whose Roll No was 1.
The ex-cadets of the Dufferin and Rajendra are now celebrating the Diamond Jubilee of maritime training in India. Some senior colleagues have opined that this is a good occasion to record the history of Dufferin. A special feature of this commemorative brochure is the directory of the cadets who have passed through the Alma-Mater. It is expected that ex-cadets of D.M.E.T. and Rajendra will pick up the threads from here when they record their history.
This Ship was named after the Marquess of Dulferin and Ava, Viceroy and Governor General of India 1884-1988.
