Today we are talking about initiatory ordinances of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS, Mormon) , specifically, the anointings. In the anointing ceremony of Mormon temples, officiators pour oil on the head of the participant, to symbolize a multitude of blessings. The anointing can represent healing, power, blessings, coronation, and the Atonement of Jesus Christ.
We'll talk about the history of anointing in the Old Testament (healing, preparation for burial, fuel for light), the history of healing practices in Latter-day Saint history, and the oil press symbolism found in the Allegory of the Olive tree. We'll also cover an ancient Egyptian ritual, the Opening of the Mouth ceremony, that may have interesting connections to the blessings we perform today in the initiatory.
