In the suburbs of Beirut, shopkeeper Riad updates his prices every day, based on the crashing exchange rate. His store is often dark – the government only provides two hours of electricity a day. To get by, many rely on expensive private generators.

The Lebanese pound has lost 90% of its value. Only those paid in US dollars can still live comfortably. Joseph, who works for an international pharmaceutical company, used his dollar salary to pay off his mortgage in just two months.

But most people aren't so lucky. Six in ten Lebanese now dream of leaving. In Tripoli, Mohammed and his son tried to escape by boat to Germany. Their journey was stopped near Turkey, but Mohammed hasn’t given up – he's still ready to risk everything for a better life in Europe.

This is the story of a country in freefall, and the people caught in the middle.
