Meaning -
Greetings to the Devi Narmada. Your river-body illuminated with sacred drops of water flows with mischievous playfulness, bending with the waves. Your sacred waters have the divine power to transform those who are prone to hatred, hatred born of sins. You have put an end to the fear of the messenger of death by giving your armor protective. Oh Devi Narmada, I bow to Your Lotus Feet, please give me refuge. || 1 ||

You give Your Divine Touch to the small fish of Your Holy Waters. You take away the burden of sins in this era of Kali; and You are the first among all the Tirtha (places of pilgrimage). You bring happiness to the many fish, turtles, crocodiles, geese and birds that dwell in the Your Waters. Oh Devi Narmada, I bow to Your Lotus Feet, please give me refuge. || 2 ||

Your river-body is deep and overflowing, its waters remove the sins of the Earth, and flows with great force making a strong reverberating sound, breaking the pieces apart mountains of anguish, the anxieties that bring about our ruin. In the heat of this world, You provide the resting place and ensure great courage; You
that on your banks you have given refuge to the son of the Rishi Mrikandu (Rishi Mârkandeya was
son of Rishi Mrikandu). Oh Devi Narmada, I bow to Your Lotus Feet, please give me refuge. || 3 ||

Oh Devi, after seeing Your Divine Waters, my attachment to worldly life is really disappeared. Your waters are revered by the son of the Rishi Mrikandu (The son of the Rishi Mrikandu was Rishi Markandeya), Rishi Shaunaka, and the enemies of the asuras (Deva). Your Waters are a protective shield against the pains of the ocean of existence worldly, caused by repeated births in this ocean of Samsara. Oh Devi Narmada, I bow to Your Lotus Feet, please give me refuge. || 4 ||

You are worshiped by countless invisible celestial beings such as the Kinnara (heavenly musicians), the
Amaras (Deva), and also from the Asura and others. Your river body with the auspicious waters, as well as its banks, are calm and composed, they are full of sweet sounds of countless birds cooing. You bring happiness to great sages like Vashistha, Sista, Pippala, Kardama and others, Oh Devi Narmada, I bow to Your Lotus Feet, please give me refuge. || 5 ||

From Rishis like Sanatkumar, Nachiketa, Kashyapa and others who are like bees who they seek the honey of divine communion, Your lotus feet are carried in their hearts; as well as by sages like Narada and others. You give happiness to Ravi (Sun), Indu (Luna), Ranti Deva and Devaraja (Indra) by making their successful works. Oh Devi Narmada, I bow to Your Lotus Feet, please give me refuge. || 6 ||

You purify innumerable invisible and visible sins with your river-body, whose shores are well decorated with countless Sarasas (cranes and swans). In that Holy Place, You grant both Bhukti (earthly prosperity) and Mukti (liberation) to all living beings. The presence of Brahma, Vishnu and Shankara in your Holy Home provides a shield protective of blessings to devotees. Oh Devi Narmada, I bow to Your Lotus Feet, please give me refuge. || 7 ||

Oh, Nectar of Immortality, which flows like Your river-body, coming from the hair tangled with Shankara, and filling your shores, there, everyone, both the Kirata (mountain tribe) and the Suta (the charioteer), the Vaddava (the brahmin), the Pandit (the learned and wise) or the Shattha (the deceitful) are purified in the dance of the your Waters. By vigorously removing Pope (sins) and Tapa (the heat of life's miseries) from all living beings, You who confer that Happiness born of Purification. Oh Devi Narmada, I bow to Your Lotus Feet, please give me refuge. || 8 ||

Those who constantly recite this Narmadashtakam in the three moments of the day, they will never have bad luck, it will become easy to obtain the great privilege of going to the home of Mahesha, than for a complexion is very difficult to achieve, And these people will no longer have to see this frightening world (taking birth). || 9 ||
