The 'traditional view' of hell, Eternal Conscious Torment, is not biblical. Conditional Immortality/Annihilation on Judgment Day appears to align much better with scripture.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
00:00 | Introduction
00:46 | Comparing the two views
3 Philosophical Roadblocks
02:06 | Roadblock 1: "Hasn't Eternal Conscious Torment Always Been The Majority View?"
02:28 | Roadblock 2: "Since we're made in the image of God, aren't our souls immortal?"
02:53 | Roadblock 3: "Doesn't sin against an infinite God warrant infinite punishment?"
03:34 | Eternal Conscious Torment's 'Go-To' Passages
04:08 | 1: Undying worms and unquenchable fire and "shame and everlasting contempt"
06:20 | 2: The worshippers of the beast: "The smoke of their torment goes up forever and ever".
08:27 | 3: The Lake of Fire + "tormented day and night forever and ever"
09:50 | 4: "Eternal Punishment" & "Eternal Destruction"
11:20 | 5: The Rich Man and Lazarus
11:57 | 6: "Weeping and gnashing of teeth" and "Blackest/outer darkness"
The Language of the Fate of the Wicked
13:29 | 7: The punishment for sin is death (not torment)
13:36 | 8: The wicked will be "destroyed" (not kept alive and tortured)
13;40 | 9: Delayed judgment allows for God's redemption plan and doesn't imply everlasting sustaining of the wicked
13:54 | 10: "Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell."
14:10 | 11: Contrasts to "Eternal Life" throughout scripture
14:37 | 12: All the verses that plainly speak of the eternal torment of wicked humans (there are none!)
Parallels to the Final Judgment
14:51 | 13: Fire burns up (parable of the weeds)
15:29 | 14: Sodom and Gomorrah is the example of what will happen to the ungodly
16:12 | 15: Physical judgments in the Old Testament were about wiping out, not torturing. The law prescribed death, not torture for the worst crimes. Satan tormented Job.
16:39 | 16: The OT sacrificial system shows the just penalty for sin (death, not torture)
16:51 | 17: Jesus died for our sins, He wasn't eternally tormented. Abraham was to kill Isaac, not torture him.
17:25 | 18: Physical death parallels what will happen spiritually. The lake of fire is the "second death"
The Fate of the Righteous vs. the Wicked
17:47 | 19: Hell is not the opposite of Heaven! The net outcome of humanity is positive.
18:26 | 20: The unrighteous have no "place" prepared for them
19:17 | 21: The Tree of Life is needed to live forever. The unrighteous don't have access.
19:37 | 22: Conditional Immortality - scripture assumes the mortality of the soul (but Plato's teachings crept in). God alone is immortal.
Other Thoughts
20:04 | 23: The "Day" of Judgment - a one-time event where ALL punishment is administered
21:03 | 24: "No more pain" - it isn't just relegated to a separate portion of the universe
21:21 | 25: Universalist phrasing kind of makes sense once the wicked are eliminated: "ALL"
21:46 | 26: Suffering doesn't pay for sins
22:02 | 27: "Better for [Judas] if he had not been born"
Common Objections
22:40 | 28: "Aren't the wicked still around after Revelation 20?" - No
23:05 | 29: "Won't Conditional Immortality cause people to be lax about sharing the Gospel?" - No
24:06 | 30: "Is Annihilation even punishment?" - Yes
24:32 | 31: "God wouldn't completely destroy a human being, would He?" - Yes
24:46 | 32: "Why are satan and his angels punished differently?"
25:04 | 33: What about Near Death Experiences that depict hell?
25:39 | 34: "Didn't Jesus preach more about hell than Heaven?" - No
25:48 7 Reasons this matters
Section Videos with more in-depth treatment will be rolled out by late spring 2025.
Conditional Immortality: the unsaved are consciously judged on Judgment Day, but do not get immortality, so are destroyed and do not suffer consciously forever and ever (also known as Annihilation).

About me: I've been a Christian for around 35 years and in 2022, after believing Eternal Conscious Torment for my whole life, I heard about Conditional Immortality from Preston Sprinkle ( • The Annihilation View of Hell , google "patheos conditional immortality"), co-author of Erasing Hell (2011) with Francis Chan. I pray that you will venture on this journey to discover what the Bible actually says about the fate of the unrighteous, as it has bigger implications than you might expect. Either way, I do believe this is an open-handed (non-salvation) issue and that there are wonderful, Bible-believing, Jesus-loving Christians that ascribe to either of these views.
