A new state office created to cut regulations and reduce government waste is now facing scrutiny.
The Texas Regulatory Efficiency Office, often referred to as “Texas DOGE,” was launched under the Governor’s Office with the stated goal of cutting red tape, eliminating outdated rules, and making Texas more business-friendly. Since its launch, the office has introduced a public complaint portal and advisory panel — but questions remain about its cost and impact.
In this Waste Watch report, State Representative Kristen Manuel calls the $22.8 million initiative unnecessary and a potential waste of taxpayer money, arguing those funds could instead support food banks, schools, or infrastructure in Southeast Texas.
Multiple interview requests to the Governor’s Office were declined. The debate continues over whether the office is delivering meaningful savings — or duplicating efforts already underway at the federal level.
