In this video, I talk to Dr. Dirk Grupe about his research on Active Galactic Nuclei and what we know about black holes.
Dr. Dirk Grupe is a Professor of Physics and Chair of the Department of Physics, Geology, and Engineering Technology at Northern Kentucky University. He joined the faculty at NKU in July 2022. His primary research interest are Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) - accreting super-massive black holes in the centers of galaxies, which he observers mostly in the ultra-violet and X-ray regimes.
He is in particular interested in the study of Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxies, a subclass of AGN which are in an early stage of there evolution still having relatively small black hole masses but high accretion rates. Dr. Grupe performs long-term monitoring campaigns on these AGN to better understand the mechanisms of the inner part of the AGN.
Prior to his position at NKU, Dr. Grupe was an Assistant/Associate Professor at the Space Science center at Morehead State University (2014-2022) and a (Senior) Research Associate at Penn State (2005-2014) serving at the Neil Gehrels Gamma-Ray Burst mission Swift Mission Operation Center for more than 9 years which is part of the Department of Astrophysics and Astronomy.
Dr. Grupe received his PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) at the University of Goettingen/Germany and has more than 200 refereed publications and more then 500 unrefereed publications.
