The Ladakh Administration has approved a new excise policy permitting the sale of foreign liquor and increasing the number of licensed liquor outlets in the Union Territory from two to 20.
According to the Administration, the policy aims to curb the growing menace of narcotics and substance abuse by providing consumers with a wider choice of regulated alcoholic beverages, including low-alcohol-content liquor. Officials have stated that the move is part of broader efforts to address rising concerns related to drug abuse in the region.
The new excise policy has been approved by Vinai Kumar Saxena.
However, the decision has drawn opposition from the Ladakh Buddhist Association (LBA). Addressing a press conference, LBA leaders expressed strong reservations over the policy and demanded its immediate withdrawal.
