The plot on which Dilip Kumar and Raj Kumar had long hesitated to come together was the very one where, in 1973, the era's superstar Rajesh Khanna clashed with the rising star Amitabh Bachchan. When production on this film began, Amitabh's image was still that of a flop hero, and the distributors wanted him to appear only in a side role opposite the lead actor Rajesh Khanna. They not only wanted to trim his role but also insisted on shortening his hair. However, by the time the film was released, Amitabh's fortunes had soared, and those same distributors now wanted to feature his face larger on the poster than Rajesh Khanna's.
Namak Haraam is Hrishikesh Mukherjee's outstanding cult film, which was also a commercial hit. It's no less fascinating that Amitabh Bachchan and Rajesh Khanna appeared together in just two films—Anand and Namak Haraam—both directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. By the time this film arrived, Zanjeer had already become a super hit, and Amitabh Bachchan had begun seizing Rajesh Khanna's superstardom.
