History:
The Muxito Hotel, inaugurated in 1956, was one of the most luxurious hotels in Portugal during the 1950s and 1960s, frequented by the national and international elite. The complex offered a wide range of amenities, including 13 villas, a motel, a nightclub, tennis courts, a restaurant, artificial lakes, and the first Olympic-size swimming pool in the country.
Despite its popularity, financial problems and the death of one of the owners, in 1973 led to the hotel's bankruptcy. The property was auctioned off to Gordana Bayloni, a Yugoslav millionaire, who planned major renovations and expansions, including a new hotel and a shopping center, but the projects were never completed. The construction of the Ponte sobre o Tejo in 1966 reduced demand for the hotel, further worsening the crisis.
After the April 25, 1974 Revolution, the hotel was occupied by revolutionaries and looted. With the death of Bayloni in 1999, the new owners were unable to recover the property, and the construction of the A2 motorway cut through part of the grounds.
Today, the Muxito Hotel lies in ruins, having been used as a kindergarten, a paintball field, and a filming location for movies like RPG (2013). Surrounded by mystery, the site is filled with legends, including reports of mysterious deaths in the pool and the alleged death of an American couple linked to international espionage. The Muxito remains abandoned, a symbol of mystery and decay.
