The line from Sima Yi to Sima Yan traces the gradual transfer of real power in late Cao Wei from loyal ministers to a ruling dynasty.
Sima Yi (179–251) rose as a brilliant strategist and statesman under Wei, ultimately seizing control of the government through the Coup of Gaoping Tombs (249). Though outwardly loyal to the Wei emperors, he established Sima dominance over the state.
His sons, Sima Shi (208–255) and Sima Zhao (211–265), inherited this power. Sima Shi ruled as regent, deposing emperors when necessary, while Sima Zhao crushed internal rebellions (notably those of Zhuge Dan) and became the true authority of Wei, famously being said to have a “heart known to all.”
Finally, Sima Yan (236–290), son of Sima Zhao, formally ended the façade. In 266, he compelled the last Wei emperor to abdicate and proclaimed himself emperor, founding the Western Jin dynasty, which later reunified China by conquering Eastern Wu in 280.
In short, the Sima line represents a three-generation transformation from ministers to emperors, achieved through political control, military authority, and careful legitimacy-building rather than sudden usurpation.
