This video compares how the choice of microphone and placement impacts the sound.
The 3 different microphones are AKG D112, Audix D6 and Sontronics DM-1B. The first two are dynamic whilst the last one is a large diaphragm condenser mic.
The 5 different placements used are:
Close to beater (just off axis) inside the drum
Middle of the drum / inside
Just inside the port hole, aimed at the beater
Close to front head / middle of the drum / outside
Foot away from the drum / inline with port hole / outside
Kick drum used is a 22" DW Collectors Maple, recorded via Behringer UMC1808 into Cubase on Windows.
No EQ, compression or effects. Just raw audio, volume adjusted.
