Описание: The idea for Tooth & Claw emerged from Halifax’s community television scene in the late 1980s. Halifax Cable Marketing asked producers to create programming that could help promote the launch of Much Music, TSN, and The Movie Network. One of the concepts developed was a game show called Quizzical Pursuit, created and hosted by Mike Boyd and Monti Michaels, an over the top host with loud plaid sports jacket and a velvet bow tie. The show also featured a puppet character, Ashburn Mayfield, performed by Jamie Bradley (CBC's Street Cents), and at the time, a Halifax Regional Library staff member known locally for his puppetry work on a weekly children’s reading program. Bradley’s performance skills quickly made him a standout figure in the city’s small but active puppetry community.

During this period puppeteer Terry Angus returned to Halifax after working with Jim Henson on Fraggle Rock, where he performed background and recurring characters. Angus, who had built puppets since childhood and idolized Henson, continued performing in specials and live events, including a Washington television program celebrating people with disabilities doing extraordinary things. After returning home, he focused on developing original children’s programming.

In 1985 Angus created Blizzard Island, a children’s series picked up by CBC. Jamie Bradley joined the production, strengthening the professional connection between Angus and the Halifax cable team, including Boyd. Although the series was eventually cancelled, the collaboration sparked a new idea. Angus presented Boyd with sketches of four animal characters — a fox, a beaver, a skunk, and a porcupine which evolved into Tooth & Claw, a concept centered on a band of friends chasing success in show business. The characters became Sly on lead guitar, Rosie on saxophone, Woody on drums, and Bristle on keyboards, with all four sharing vocals.

To test the idea on screen, a music video was produced using Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes song "I've Had The Time of My Life". Jamie Bradley performed Sly, Ann Carlos performed Rosie, Terry Angus performed Woody, and Stoney Ripley performed Bristle. Over the next several years Boyd wrote roughly ten scripts as the creative team attempted to develop the project for network television. A second promotional video featuring an original theme song (Seen Here) was written by Ripley and his brother and was filmed around Halifax and generated industry attention, though a sale remained elusive.

In the late 1990s a producer secured Nova Scotia Film funding to shoot a pilot. The modest budget meant the production relied heavily on volunteer contributions. With ACTRA’s approval, union puppeteers participated without pay, and experienced local designers, builders, and editors donated their time. Boyd wrote a Christmas themed episode after the team received permission to record the original song “It’s Christmas Time, Again,” written by a local musician and recorded specifically for the pilot. (I don't have access to this Christmas Special, at least, not yet)

Sets were built at the Pond Playhouse in Herring Cove, with additional scenes shot in Halifax Cable’s studio and on location to establish the characters’ neighborhood. Creative staging techniques allowed full body puppet performances despite limited resources. The pilot tells the origin of the band: three lifelong friends searching for something missing discover Rosie, a singer and saxophonist whose arrival completes the group. After reluctantly accepting her into the lineup, the band enters a local television music contest, wins, and officially becomes Tooth & Claw.

Post production was completed with the help of editor Jeff, who joined the project independently and shaped the final cut. The finished pilot attracted interest from both CBC and CTV, but a broadcast deal never materialized. Despite years of development and strong creative backing, the series ultimately remained a standalone production.

Tooth & Claw stands as a testament to Halifax’s collaborative television culture, combining professional puppetry, grassroots production, and community driven creativity into an ambitious children’s series that came remarkably close to reaching national audiences. The stage has not yet gone dark for Tooth and Claw - an encore is still in the air, there is still interest from the creators in bringing these characters to life all these years later if someone should come along with the means to help.
