Derbyshire’s War Dead – Three War Graves at Matlock Churchyard – Three Forgotten Lives
In the heart of Matlock, St. Giles Churchyard holds 21 Commonwealth War Graves — quiet reminders of sacrifice from both WW1 and WW2. In this powerful episode, we uncover the forgotten lives of three men buried here.
🪖 Private Roy Woodhouse served with the 1/6th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters. Wounded during the Battle of the Somme, he died months later from his injuries. A local painter turned soldier — his grave bears witness to a young life cut short.
✈️ Sergeant Edward John Loverock, a 61 Squadron RAF air gunner from Uttoxeter, was killed in a Lancaster crash during a training flight in 1943. Aged just 21, he was brought home to Matlock, his sacrifice etched in stone.
🛩️ Midshipman Godfrey Terrington Slater, of the Fleet Air Arm, was only 18 when he died in a tragic training accident. A talented glider pilot from Bakewell, he was the youngest of the three — and a symbol of promise never fulfilled.
These three graves in Matlock Churchyard tell stories of bravery, youth, and duty.
