The Tech Team 00716 4 inch spring loaded gate caster is designed to support the lower corner of a typical garden or driveway gate. The coil compression spring allows the wheel to negotiate smoothly over prepared surfaces such as asphalt and concrete. The heavy duty steel construction, ball bearing swivel, zinc plated finish and solid wheel insure many years of service.

The 4” is just right for rolling across prepared services such as concrete, macadam or asphalt and supporting gates up to 125 pounds. The 4” caster consists of two parts, the upper part with the compression spring and the lower part with the heavy duty, solid 4” roller that connects to the upper part with a grip ring stem and it swivels with ball bearings that are enclosed right there so it rides nice and smooth. The entire set has a heavy duty, weather resistant zinc finish. The set has a compression spring that allows the wheel to roll over slightly uneven surfaces and also accommodate slight differences in incline or grade. Mounting holes are 10 mm, which is just perfect for 10 mm, 3/8 inch or 5/16 inch bolts or screws. Even though #12 or #14 sheet metal screws will work your best bet is to use a 5/16 or 3/8” bolt with a nut and washer. To properly mount you gate caster you're going to want to put it right at the end of the gate and then compress the spring just a little bit and then mark the center of your holes where are you going to put your screws. We're going to be using #12 screws so it's a good idea to drill pilot holes first. This way, the screws are going in much easier and they will not crack the wood. When you open the box you're going to see that the caster comes in two parts. You have the spring mechanism bracket on the top, and then you have the wheel with a grip ring stem. To assemble, simply insert the stem all the way in and now you're good to go. With #12 hex head screws here we have a hex driver because this can be high torque situation. The suggestion here is to mount the top screw first and then you can work the bottom one into place and get them all snug. We've used these #12 hex head screws here but you could also very effectively use 3/8 or 5/16 inch nuts, bolts and washers. Ok, now we've got our caster in place and, as you can see, it very effectively supports the lower corner of the gate.
