Hanna Tomczyk (Department of History and Philosophy of Science, Cambridge): Using mathematics in science
Note: The talk contains research ideas, work in progress, and preliminary results.
Abstract:
Many philosophers and scientists have found the usefulness of mathematics in science surprising. I will discuss different ways of framing this feeling of surprise as a philosophical problem and I will defend the question: “How come there are scientific terms that are meaningful in both mathematical and material contexts?” as a careful, yet fruitful way of dealing with the issue. I will suggest “Integrated HPS” as a particularly helpful methodology to approach an answer. To show how I mean to employ this method, I will briefly discuss a historical case study: the development of the term “velocity” until the 18th century with its use in mathematical and experimental contexts, the usefulness of the term at different times and possible philosophical lessons we might gain from this case study.
The talk was given at the Philosophy of Science & Methodology Colloquium (University of Tübingen) organized by Prof. Dr. Alexandra Zinke and Prof. Dr. Hong Yu Wong.
