I started from Brig at 9:00am, and hiked for 20km (covering a total of 2900m of altitude difference) to get up on top of the glacier. I mainly did this to escape the heat wave that had been gripping Zürich for weeks. You can continue from the hut to various further destinations in the Oberaletsch area (Finsteraarhorn, for example).
One interesting thing to notice at this location is how much the glacier has retreated in the past 100 years. The ice used to be level with the hut, but has since receded almost 200m, creating a high concentration of moraines on top.
