Alleppey (officially Alappuzha) is one of the few beach cities you’ll find where the impressive oceanfront is not the main attraction.

Rather, the focus here is inland, on the Kerala Backwaters—a vast network of lakes, rivers and canals that has fostered a unique waterborne lifestyle for centuries.

The backwaters aren’t only home to one of India’s most productive agricultural areas (this part of Kerala is often called the “rice bowl of India”); it’s also a rich source of history and lore associated with the spice trade.

The pleasant guesthouse where I’m staying is a short walk from the wonderful, yet largely empty beach in a neighborhood that feels more like a remote island village than part of a city of 250,000 people.

Quiet and tranquil. Another India stereotype bites the dust.
