For and Against a United Ireland

Описание: On March 18, 2026, the Boston College Irish Institute welcomed renowned journalists Fintan O'Toole and Sam McBride for a timely and thought-provoking conversation on their book For and Against a United Ireland (University of Notre Dame Press, 2026).

Commissioned by ARINS—a joint initiative of the University of Notre Dame and the Royal Irish Academy—the book brings together contrasting perspectives on one of the most significant constitutional questions facing Ireland today.

In this engaging exchange, O’Toole and McBride each present arguments both for and against Irish unity. Beginning with the deceptively simple question—what does a “united Ireland” actually mean?—they explore the political, economic, and cultural implications of potential constitutional change. From public services and taxation to governance, identity, and belonging, the discussion offers a rigorous and balanced examination of the opportunities and challenges ahead.
