A Transient Luminous Event (TLE) is a brief light phenomenon that occurs in the upper layers of Earth's atmosphere, usually above a thunderstorm. This phenomenon lasts only a few milliseconds to seconds and is not directly visible from the Earth's surface.
TLEs occur due to the discharge of electrical energy from thunderclouds into the higher layers of the atmosphere. There are several types of TLEs, such as:
Sprites: red flashes above storm clouds, shaped like jellyfish or columns of light.
Blue Jets: bursts of blue light that rise from the cloud tops into the stratosphere.
Elves: giant red rings of light that form very quickly in the ionosphere.
This phenomenon was first documented in the late 20th century and is still being studied today because it can help understand the interactions between storms, the atmosphere, and Earth's electric field
