Black Balsam Knob - to the summit in ice & snow

Описание: I took on one of the most iconic hikes in Western North Carolina — but this time, in full winter conditions after a major snowstorm.

Starting on the Flat Laurel Creek Trail, I made my way through snow-covered forest and icy creek crossings toward Sam Knob Meadow before pushing on to the summit of Black Balsam Knob, the highest peak in the Pisgah National Forest.

This was not your typical fair-weather hike.

The trail was coated with snow and layered in ice, requiring traction gear, trekking poles, and multiple protective layers to handle the wind and exposure to extreme low temperatures. The final 1.5 miles to the summit were the toughest — deep, loose, powdery snow made every step a challenge. Progress slowed, footing became unpredictable, and the climb turned into a true winter grind.

But reaching the top? Absolutely worth it.

Snow-covered balds stretched in every direction, and the Blue Ridge felt raw, quiet, and powerful. Winter completely transforms Black Balsam Knob — fewer people, harsher conditions, and a much bigger sense of accomplishment.
